Before my eclectic collection of Christmas books, I thought you might like these Christmas Cards (I can’t remember where I saw them first, I suspect an advert on Instagram!) I bought them from Design Smith Cards, via Holly & Co.
my little section of Christmas books is a true potpourri! Books with recipes, poetry and short stories, one or two longer novels, some historical facts, alongside Christmas myths. Perfect for dipping in and out, which I believe essential at this time of year.
I mentioned The Christmas Chronicles back on 1st November.
I remember listening to Jeanette Winterson discussing this book on BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour (December 9th, 2016), and immediately buying it.
Short stories from Louisa May Alcott ( who writes so beautifully about Christmas in Little Women) and Anthony Trollope.
I absolutely love Georgette Heyer’s Regency set novels, the short stories in Snowdrift are fun. She also wrote crime novels. Her ‘golden age’ detective fiction is well worth reading.
Dickens virtually invented the modern Christmas.
Christmas facts and myths, stories and poems, ideas for preparing for Christmas.
I brought this book last year, it has daily meditations for both Advent and Christmas time, I am going to try and spend some time each day pausing and reading.
Years ago, when we first moved to Richmond, I started buying Country Living magazine (we do live in the greenest electoral ward in London, very nearly country!) In the first Christmas edition I read, there was an article about Martha Stewart. Later I found a copy of her Christmas book in Jerry’s Home Store (sadly no longer trading). I’ve never been to Nantucket, but have always loved the idea of the island, ever since I read Joan Aiken’s Nightbirds on Nantucket, as a child.
A couple of poetry books…
A long read and short read…
A book I discovered via Instagram…
From the Irish version of the Women’s Institute. (I’m baking the Porter Cake next week.)
Just a couple more …
I have been thinking about Children’s Christmas books too, so will pop a few suggestions on here next week.
at one stage I had a vast number of Christmas books, but have given many away. The few I have left I’ll be reading to my Grandsons when they visit.
Please let me know your favourite Christmas books, ( for yourself, for gifts and for children.)
Jude xx
Jude, we almost have the same book collection! I love Christmas books and can never get enough.
I remember Jerry's Home Store... there was one around Brompton Road I think? Close to Kelly Hoppen. I bought a Coca Cola wall mounted bottle opener in there which these days is mounted on my garden shed! I'd like to visit Nantucket if I went to the States, in the meantime I'll have to settle for L'Île-de-Ré !
